Megalo Print Studio Heritage Conservation

The fit out of the Administration Block of the Former Transport Depot, Kingston, as a new home for Megalo Print Studio seamlessly integrates modern function with heritage values in both the building and its precinct.

The fit out of the Administration Block of the Former Transport Depot, Kingston, as a new home for Megalo Print Studio seamlessly integrates modern function with heritage values in both the building and its precinct.

The Former Transport Depot is one of the last remnants of the early industrial / services complex at Kingston. The Depot, together with the adjoining Powerhouse and Fitters Workshop, is an important feature of the Kingston foreshore industrial heritage precinct. The internal fit-out addressed Megalo’s brief for practical, well-lit workspaces that comply with current regulations for fire safety, health, amenity and energy efficiency. The use of the Administration Block for a print studio reinforces the semi-industrial nature of the buildings and wider precincts.

Externally the 1940s building volume, façade and clock tower were retained. The only changes to the façade were the replacement of non-original glass blocks with new clear glazed windows which match the general appearance of the originals and the addition of two doorways which were carefully designed to be sympathetic to the building.

With the completion of this project, part of Canberra’s early industrial heritage was given new life serving a new industrial use.
