Goulburn Uniting Church — Heritage Restoration

Philip Leeson Architects directed the heritage restoration of the spire on Goulburn’s Uniting Church.

The Goulburn Uniting Church is a listed heritage item in the Goulburn Mulwarree Council LEP. The original timber framed, shingle clad spire was declared structurally unsafe in c2015. PLA were engaged to design and document the replacement spire and provide construction phase services through to completion. The consultancy included gaining heritage and construction approval; coordinating the work of a structural engineer; determining the most efficient replacement structure; and selecting the appropriate cladding material.

A steel structure was built up from the existing brick tower which was reinforced with a new concrete ring beam moulded to replicate the original brick and render corralling. A double layer of plywood sheathing around the steel frame provided a base for a breathable membrane that was overlaid with new zinc shingles that matched the dimensions and shape of the original tin tiles.

Philip Leeson Architects oversaw the work of the contractor through to the completion of the works.
