Story Heritage House Canberra

This project involved the creation of a spacious family home from a modest 1920s brick cottage within a heritage conservation area. The new heritage-compliant design more than doubles the size of the original house. The small existing rooms were retained as a living room and secondary bedrooms. In addition, the rear has a T-shaped plan, wrapping around an entertaining deck on the north side and a service deck to the south.

The new wing contains family living areas opening to the north and west, and a master suite. The house is on a single level, whereby the gentle slope of the land toward the rear means that the rear rooms are slightly elevated and enjoy pleasant district views. The link to the garden is made via a covered verandah and broad steps.

The design echoes the existing form and materials, including painted brickwork, reclaimed red terracotta roof tiles and timber doors and windows. Despite the traditional external appearance the interiors are spacious and light-filled and address contemporary living needs.
