Aarthi Ayyar-Biddle of LightStudies recently took photos of a project by Philip Leeson Architects that has just been completed in construction – the Ross Baker House in Garran. We have posted a selection of these on the project page, but here are a couple of tasters!
The builder for this project was WQM Building Group.
Philip Leeson Architects were presented with a modest brief for this alterations and additions project in Garran, ACT. It included the need for a new master bedroom wing, a new kitchen, greater connectivity within the downstairs living spaces, as well as to the backyard and mountain views beyond.
We worked closely with our client to design a modest extension, which is barely visible from the street and doesn’t elude to the explosion of colour and form at the rear of the house. A central void space, with north facing windows, draws light deep down into the middle of the building footprint where previously there was only a low ceiling plane. Our clients were very keen to add a second storey to the home, which we designed with a master bedroom, separate bathroom, small sitting space and walk in robe. Lying in bed, views can now be enjoyed of the Brindabellas in the distance!
The kitchen has become the hub of the home, with the ground floor living spaces and the entry from the street radiating from this central point. A new timber deck has been added to the rear of the extension capturing views across rooftops to the mountains ranges beyond.
We selected an economical, durable and vibrant palette of materials internally and externally, which kept the construction cost down and creates a striking contrast with the original red brick and terracotta tile home.
